Job Summary of the Echo Technologist

The Echo Technologist performs the daily routine/critical care and diagnostic procedures as ordered by the Physician. Specifications of this position require employee to be proficient in either Echocardiography or Noninvasive Vascular Imaging with Registration in either a facility option at time of hire. The Echo Technologist performs required diagnostic testing, conducts basic equipment maintenance, quality control measures, reporting of abnormal findings to physician (if immediate attention is indicated), and other administrative, technical or supervisory tasks as might be required.

Responsibilities of the Echo Technologist
  • Operate the Hewlett-Packard and Marquette Electronics ECG Systems to obtain a routine ECG and rhythm tracing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper ECG lead placement and troubleshoots system/electrodes sufficient to obtain a tracing good diagnostic quality.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize basic arrhythmias (PVC vs. PAC) and ectopic origin of each.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the ECG complex and ischemic vs. injury patterns.
  • Perform routine Exercise Tolerance Test via a motor driven treadmill, including Stress Echo.
  • Perform and assist with Nuclear Medicine imaging procedures such as Adenosine or Dobutamine pharmacological stress procedures.
  • Perform 24-hour Holter hook-up and disconnect, and scan resultant tape via the PC MED scanning system.
  • Perform 2D and M Mode Echocardiography via the HP 5500 & 4500 ECHO Systems.
  • Perform Cardiac Doppler/Color Flow Doppler via the HP 5500 & 4500 ECHO Systems.
  • Assist with Transesophageal Echo via system manipulation while probe is passed by physician
  • Assist with Dobutamine Stress Echo.
  • Carry out physician's orders accurately in performance of diagnostic studies. Review chart when feasible to verify orders.
  • Accept physician's oral and phone orders according to Departmental policy.
  • Consider age-related factors and limitations in the treatment and instruction of patients.
  • Maintain knowledge of the care of pediatric patients. Consider age-related factors in the assessment, care and treatment of pediatric patients.
  • Maintain patient's right to privacy and confidentiality of information at all times. Confidentiality is demonstrated by limiting patient related discussion to only the appropriate health care workers and avoiding discussions in areas where information may be overheard.
  • Demonstrate understanding of HCA's and Patients First safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications of the Echo Technologist

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Associate degree in Applied Science of equivalent is preferred
  • One year of hospital-based sonography experience preferred

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

  • RDCS - Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or RCS - Registered Cardiac Sonographer by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
